All the time I hear people talking about alcohol and fat loss and how you can pretty much NEVER drink alcohol if you want to lose weight and keep it off.

But is that really the way you want to live you life, stuck to certain rules and principles and guided by whether or not something is going to make you just a tiny little bit fatter?

I hope not!

Listen, I obviously care a lot about my weight and everything, but I would never compromise my life for it. If I want to go out and have a drink with my fiancee, I’m going to do it.

Now am I suggesting that you go out and get drunk 3 times per week, drinking 5-10 beers each time? Of course not!

But if you want the occasional drink, I don’t think alcohol and fat loss should even be talked about. Sure, it might give you extra calories and screw up your hormones a tad, but it’s not like you’re going to have 1-2 beers and all of a sudden lose 2% of your muscle mass and gain 5 pounds of fat!

I personally have 1 or 2 beers a week, then usually 1 night out of the week or once every 2 weeks or so, I’ll have a few more. I don’t go crazy, I don’t drink 700 calorie drinks – I do it in moderation.

And if I get invited to a wedding or some kind of celebration, I’m not going to be that boring person in the back of the room who won’t even touch a drink because they’re afraid they’re going to gain 1 ounce of fat (to be clear, if you don’t want to drink because you just don’t want to, that’s fine, but don’t not have a drink once in awhile because you’re afraid you’re going to gain weight!).

Just please don’t take this as me saying it’s OK to get drunk and drink all the time. A glass or so per night is fine – it’s not going to kill you. It’s only 100-150 extra calories, and that’s SO easy to make up throughout the course of the day. If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol at night and you’re worried about fat loss, just eat a little less during the day to make up for it.

It’s really as easy as that!

So do alcohol and fat loss mix in a diet program?

I think they do, you just have to be able to control yourself and not go out and get plastered every night of the week!
