Childhood Obesity: Who’s Fault Is It?

May 11, 2009 · Filed Under Philosophies On Fitness

I was just reading that over 20% of children today under the age of 10 are considered obese.

WHAT!?!

Considering the fact that less than 1% of the population is born with genes that pretty much make them obese no matter what they do…I think something is wrong here – don’t you?

But the worst part is, the parents of these children walk around like they don’t know why the children are so overweight.

Ummm….hellooo – do you see the lifestyle of kids nowadays?

When I was a kid, I spent nearly all my time either outside riding bikes, wrestling with my buddies, building things, playing sports, etc.

And when I was inside I was still playing active games, wrestling with pillows, etc.

But for some reason over the past generation or 2…people are starting to get seriously lazy.

And I mean SERIOUSLY lazy.

From what I’ve seen, the tables have completely turned. Now kids just want to sit home eating chips and playing Playstation, watch movies and just lay around all day.

And the worst part is…parents are ENCOURAGING this type of behavior!

Parents: I’m not sure if this is you or not, you need to be a role model for your children. If you want them to be healthy, YOU need to be healthy. If you want them to be active, YOU need to be active.

I don’t think people understand that.

Children look up to their parents as heroes. They want to be like them no matter what.

So if you eat healthy and exercise regularly, your kids will too. If you eat junk food all the time and don’t exercise (like 65% of Americans), your children are going to grow up being overweight, sick and lazy as well.

Now if you’re reading this…I’m guessing your mostly likely not overweight and if you are – you’re at least doing something to correct that problem.

So I want you go to spread this message as well. Let people know that the actions of the parents are what’s going to make the children grow up to be the person they’re going to be.

As I said, children want to do the same things as their parents. So right now if you’re not eating healthy, start eating healthy. Don’t even do it for you, do it for your children.

And if your children don’t want to be active, then YOU should be active. Have them come outside and do playful things with you. Maybe throw a ball around, teach them how to play a sport, or do something that gets them moving around.

When I was a kid, almost nobody was overweight. Literally.

Honestly in a school of about 200 people, I bet there were maybe 5 kids who were overweight.

It just saddens me to see so many young kids overweight these days. I saw a young kid the other day who was probably 10 years old and literally had a bigger waistline than me.

In fact I bet he weighed close to the same weight as I do, even though he was easily 12-18 inches shorter.

So if you do anything today..teach your kids about the importance of health. Go out and buy some fruit and veggies, and show them how to be more active.

This is, of course, for parents who are having a problem with an overweight child.

In my opinion, it’s not the child’s fault that they’re overweight. At that age they don’t know enough, they simply model what their parents are doing.

And if you don’t tell them about the importance of health, they’re not going to fully understand it. And if you don’t personally practice what you’re preaching, they won’t do it.

So get out there and start showing those kids what it means to be healthy!
