Why Experts Aren’t Always Right
We’ve been led to believe that just because someone has credentials – it automatically means they know what they’re talking about. A lot of people also won’t trust anybody who doesn’t have credentials.
But is that how things should be?
Listen, just because somebody has credentials doesn’t mean a thing.
What if the information they got to get those credentials was false?
What if they got those credentials through a shady company only looking for money and the expertise was hardly above the knowledge level of an average fitness enthusiast?
These are things you really need to think about not only when it comes to fitness, but also in real life.
Let me give you an example.
Dietitians and personal trainers are led to believe that if you dgo more than 3 hours without food your metabolism will drop, eating less calories results in a loss of muscle, etc. etc.
But as we know, those things aren’t true.
So – dietitians are wrong.
Yet many people will believe what a dietitian says even if I walked over to them with the cold hard facts and plopped it right in front of their face (this is pretending I’m not a C.P.T.)
Why?
Because in our society, we’re conditioned to blindly follow the advice of people with letters after their name.
Sure, in most cases people with credentials have more knowledge than the average person, but it doesn’t mean they know everything!
I don’t care what a doctor tells me about how I’m feeling. Only I know how I feel and if I think he/she is wrong – they probably are.
Do you feel the same way?
To me, we rely too much on letters after a persons name instead of relying on our own instincts and listening to our bodies.
I think if more people listened to their own body and what they truly felt, we’d be a much healthier society and getting in shape would become much easier!
Let me know your comments below. Do you feel the same way as I do, or do you think credentials mean more than I’m giving them credit for?
Childhood Obesity: Who’s Fault Is It?
I was just reading that over 20% of children today under the age of 10 are considered obese.
WHAT!?!
Considering the fact that less than 1% of the population is born with genes that pretty much make them obese no matter what they do…I think something is wrong here – don’t you?
But the worst part is, the parents of these children walk around like they don’t know why the children are so overweight.
Ummm….hellooo – do you see the lifestyle of kids nowadays?
When I was a kid, I spent nearly all my time either outside riding bikes, wrestling with my buddies, building things, playing sports, etc.
And when I was inside I was still playing active games, wrestling with pillows, etc.
But for some reason over the past generation or 2…people are starting to get seriously lazy.
And I mean SERIOUSLY lazy.
From what I’ve seen, the tables have completely turned. Now kids just want to sit home eating chips and playing Playstation, watch movies and just lay around all day.
And the worst part is…parents are ENCOURAGING this type of behavior!
Parents: I’m not sure if this is you or not, you need to be a role model for your children. If you want them to be healthy, YOU need to be healthy. If you want them to be active, YOU need to be active.
I don’t think people understand that.
Children look up to their parents as heroes. They want to be like them no matter what.
So if you eat healthy and exercise regularly, your kids will too. If you eat junk food all the time and don’t exercise (like 65% of Americans), your children are going to grow up being overweight, sick and lazy as well.
Now if you’re reading this…I’m guessing your mostly likely not overweight and if you are – you’re at least doing something to correct that problem.
So I want you go to spread this message as well. Let people know that the actions of the parents are what’s going to make the children grow up to be the person they’re going to be.
As I said, children want to do the same things as their parents. So right now if you’re not eating healthy, start eating healthy. Don’t even do it for you, do it for your children.
And if your children don’t want to be active, then YOU should be active. Have them come outside and do playful things with you. Maybe throw a ball around, teach them how to play a sport, or do something that gets them moving around.
When I was a kid, almost nobody was overweight. Literally.
Honestly in a school of about 200 people, I bet there were maybe 5 kids who were overweight.
It just saddens me to see so many young kids overweight these days. I saw a young kid the other day who was probably 10 years old and literally had a bigger waistline than me.
In fact I bet he weighed close to the same weight as I do, even though he was easily 12-18 inches shorter.
So if you do anything today..teach your kids about the importance of health. Go out and buy some fruit and veggies, and show them how to be more active.
This is, of course, for parents who are having a problem with an overweight child.
In my opinion, it’s not the child’s fault that they’re overweight. At that age they don’t know enough, they simply model what their parents are doing.
And if you don’t tell them about the importance of health, they’re not going to fully understand it. And if you don’t personally practice what you’re preaching, they won’t do it.
So get out there and start showing those kids what it means to be healthy!
What’s The Best Fat Loss Program For YOU?
One very big problem I see when it comes to people trying to lose weight is that they’re listening to the people the shouldn’t be listening to.
Trust me, there are A LOT of people, even some fitness experts, that are going to try and “prove” to you that their system is the best out there.
They try to say that their system is the ONLY system that will work and that other programs won’t do as good of a job at helping you lose weight.
I completely disagree with that.
You see, the ONLY way you’re going to lose weight is if you’re in a caloric deficit. Put simply, if you burn more calories than you eat (or drink), you’re going to lose weight.
The method for this DOES NOT matter.
I recently read a study where they put a bunch of people on a variety of diets for a year.
This included low-carb, high-carb, high-protein, low-fat, and all the other combinations you can think of.
And guess what?
The results showed that the METHOD of losing weight didn’t matter – it all came down to simply having a caloric deficit and actually being able to stick with the program.
This is a little extreme, but you could literally eat cheesecake all day and lose weight. As long as you’re burning off more calories than you’re eating in cheesecake, it’s going to come off.
So with that said, how do you pick the right fat loss program for you then?
In my opinion it all comes down to how easy it is for you to stick with. If you’re following a diet plan now that’s too restricting, makes you count calories, makes you eat 6 meals per day, and all that other non-sense (for the record, I DO believe in calorie counting and know that it works wonderfully, it’s just that most people aren’t that dedicated to losing weight and won’t actually do it), you’re probably going to fail.
Is that kind of a diet good for people who are going into competitions or are so insanely crazy about their appearance that they’d rather restrict themselves than be able to eat some of the foods they love? Sure it is.
But for the vast majority of people out there who simply want to lose weight and look good but aren’t worried about having every single muscle in their body showing, I think it’s simply too hard to stick with.
In my opinion the best fat loss program that you can be on is one that’s flexible. It allows you to cheat a little bit when you get the urge, or be completely strict if you want to lose fat faster and get as ripped and lean as possible.
You just need to go out there and follow your instincts to figure out who’s got the best fat loss program out there for YOU.
Why The Lack Of Healthy Snacks For Children Is Just The Beginning Of The Problem

In my opinion, healthy snacks for children in todays world is an absolute necessity. The obesity rate among children is absolutely disgusting, and instead of shutting my mouth like everybody else, I’m going to come right out and say it.
It’s the parents fault!
Listen, excluding some rare circumstance where a child has some kind of weird metabolic disorder like an under active thyroid, if you kid is obese – kids should NOT be overweight.
It’s pathetic how many kids are obese today, and it’s because instead of parents teaching them how they should be eating and preparing healthy snacks for the children, they’re having sleepovers and feeding them chips, soda, pizza, ice cream, and all other fattening foods.
And like you probably know, there’s nothing wrong with that in moderation, but come on now. Kids metabolisms are usually sky-high and when I was a kid, in my entire school (a total of 6 grades) I bet there was less than 10 obese children in the entire school.
Now 30% of kids are!
So What’s The Problem?
I think the main problem today is that parents don’t have enough control over their children. I can’t count how many times I’ve gone into a restaurant and seen kids misbehaving incredibly bad, yet their parents don’t say a word.
God help me if I ever did that when I was a kid!
This lack of control then carries over into the health aspect of these kids lives as well. If they want a cookie, they get it. If they don’t want to eat healthy snacks that children should be eating, they don’t have to eat it. If they want to sit home on their butts and play Playstation all night instead of going outside and playing like a kid should be doing, nobody says a word!
So is this your child? Are they running all over you with no control? If so, start by giving the children healthy snacks to eat. Gain your control back just with that. Then move on to bigger things.
You don’t want your children to grow up obese and lazy right? Then start doing something NOW while their young to cement into their minds that being healthy is important, and that healthy snacks for children is a GOOD thing!
Another thing you can try to do is to get your kids actively involved in working out. I bet if they worked out literally right along side of you, they would start to see exercising as a good thing and maybe you can show them that it’s fun and something everybody should be doing.
No matter what your strategy, it’s sad how many children today are obese and it needs to be stopped. Healthy snacks for children are just the beginning of the struggle to getting them healthy and fit, but that struggle needs to start today!
Do Alcohol And Fat Loss Mix?
All the time I hear people talking about alcohol and fat loss and how you can pretty much NEVER drink alcohol if you want to lose weight and keep it off.
But is that really the way you want to live you life, stuck to certain rules and principles and guided by whether or not something is going to make you just a tiny little bit fatter?
I hope not!
Listen, I obviously care a lot about my weight and everything, but I would never compromise my life for it. If I want to go out and have a drink with my fiancee, I’m going to do it.
Now am I suggesting that you go out and get drunk 3 times per week, drinking 5-10 beers each time? Of course not!
But if you want the occasional drink, I don’t think alcohol and fat loss should even be talked about. Sure, it might give you extra calories and screw up your hormones a tad, but it’s not like you’re going to have 1-2 beers and all of a sudden lose 2% of your muscle mass and gain 5 pounds of fat!
I personally have 1 or 2 beers a week, then usually 1 night out of the week or once every 2 weeks or so, I’ll have a few more. I don’t go crazy, I don’t drink 700 calorie drinks – I do it in moderation.
And if I get invited to a wedding or some kind of celebration, I’m not going to be that boring person in the back of the room who won’t even touch a drink because they’re afraid they’re going to gain 1 ounce of fat (to be clear, if you don’t want to drink because you just don’t want to, that’s fine, but don’t not have a drink once in awhile because you’re afraid you’re going to gain weight!).
Just please don’t take this as me saying it’s OK to get drunk and drink all the time. A glass or so per night is fine – it’s not going to kill you. It’s only 100-150 extra calories, and that’s SO easy to make up throughout the course of the day. If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol at night and you’re worried about fat loss, just eat a little less during the day to make up for it.
It’s really as easy as that!
So do alcohol and fat loss mix in a diet program?
I think they do, you just have to be able to control yourself and not go out and get plastered every night of the week!
